The film is slated for an August 2023 release.
Between the upcoming
third season of Euphoria and the sequel to Dune, we’re counting down the days until we see Zendaya on our screens again. Luckily, we now have one more project to look forward to.
Zendaya stars in the upcoming film Challengers, a romantic dramedy directed by Luca Guadagnino (the filmmaker behind Call Me By Your Name and Bones and All). Zendaya plays Tashi Donaldson, a pro tennis player turned coach. After her husband, Art Donaldson, falls into an exasperating losing streak, she trains him to become a world-renowned grand slam champion. Tashi enrolls Art into the low-level challengers event of a pro tour, where he finds himself going up against his former best friend and Tashi’s ex, Patrick.
Wondering when you can see Zendaya hit the tennis courts? Here, we break down everything we know so far about Challengers, including trailers, release dates, cast news, and more.
There’s still some time until we see Zendaya on the silver screen again. Challengers is slated to hit theaters on August 11, 2023.
Zendaya, as mentioned, plays Tashi Donaldson. Mike Faist, who previously starred in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, plays her husband, Art Donaldson. Josh O’Connor, of The Crown fame, plays Patrick, Art’s childhood best friend and Tashi’s ex.
Additional casting details have not yet been announced.
Not yet. But according to Variety, the film wrapped production in June, so we could see a teaser trailer sometime in the next few months.
Zendaya is not relying on her body double for her upcoming role in Challengers. In preparation of playing Tashi, Z spent three months training with a tennis pro. “She’s wonderful,” director Luca Guadagnino told Variety at the October 15 Academy Museum Gala. “I mean, wow. We edited the movie and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good.”
“They spent like three months working very hard,” Guadagnino added. “Everybody – technically, athletically.”
Zendaya simply continues to amaze us in all aspects of life.
