Users on Reddit discuss their favorite ‘first girl’ to be killed off in horror films.
If you're a horror movie fan, slasher films in particular, you're already familiar with the final girl. Coined by Carol Clover in her book Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, the final girl term is used to describe the character who is most often the sole survivor at the end of the horror flick. In that vein, a new film term might have just been invented to describe the exact opposite—the character who gets killed first in the movie.
"Who's your favorite 'first girl'?"
That question was posted on Reddit by user kukes15, beginning a threat that, as of this, has 77 comments. Kukes15 wrote that while most of these ladies aren't around for long and are among the first to be dispatched, there are some standout performances out there. For example, they listed Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) from Scream, whose death is the iconic opening scene of the movie.
"It's the fact that she gets so close to being saved….. I remember really fucking rooting for her the first time I watched Scream. We were in the theater literally screaming lol (everyone was) and shouting at the characters and when she finally got killed it blew us all away cause no one expected Drew Barrymore to die. Hell they marketed the movie heavily with her name and face. Just another thing that makes the first so fuckin great!" wrote StardustandDreams.
While there were a wide range of responses, there were a couple of recurring answers. Some listed were Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) from Psycho, Chrissie Watkins (Susan Backlinie) from Jaws, Pat (Eva Axén) from Suspiria (1977), and Heather (Maya Hawke) from Fear Street Part One: 1994. A lot of people also reiterated the Casey Becker example as well.

"I love that Janet Leigh is the first girl and Jamie Lee Curtis is the final girl. Love the family progression." Wrote Mister-Murder.
A noticeable pattern among first girls is that they are initially set up as the film's main characters. That's part of the reason why Marion Crane and Casey Becker getting killed was so shocking when their respective films came out. Other first girls who initially appeared to be the lead on the thread include Tina Grey (Amanda Wyss) from A Nightmare on Elm Street and Kate Miller (Angie Dickinson) from Dressed to Kill.
"I know that the two counselors at the beginning are technically Mrs. Voorhees' first kills. But I consider Annie the real first girl in Friday the 13th. I thought for sure she was going to be the final girl. All cute and bubbly and full of hope." Wrote MachineGunTeacher
Other characters' names were put down despite not being the first to die, besides Annie, whose name came up a couple of times. Barb Coard (Margot Kidder) from Black Christmas (1974) was the fourth one killed. Lynda Van Der Klok (PJ Soles) from Halloween (1978) was the fifth and final victim.
