At last, we’re returning to Genovia.
Disney is making a third installation of The Princess Diaries? Shut. Up.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Aadrita Mukerji (whose writing credits include Supergirl and Reacher) has been recruited to write the script for the long-awaited third movie of the royal franchise, based on Meg Cabot’s young adult novelsof the same name. Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two movies, will return to produce the new Princess Diaries. Meanwhile, Melissa Stack, the screenwriter for The Other Woman, will executive produce.
Sources told the outlet that the forthcoming script will continue the storyline established in the previous movies, rather than completely reboot the franchise. Still, the silver screen homecoming of Genovia’s reigning queen, Amelia "Mia" Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, isn’t so certain.
Ahead, everything we know so far.
Disney has yet to confirm whether or not Hathaway will reprise her role as Mia for the third Princess Diaries—but that doesn’t mean she won’t.
In fact, Hathaway has previously expressed interest in stepping back into the character that had first catapulted her into super stardom. "I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it," she told Entertainment Tonight. "If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."
Andrews, of course, stole viewers’s hearts as Clarisse Renaldi, Genovia’s queen regent and Mia’s grandmother.
Though discussions popped up over the years about a third Princess Diaries movie, Andrews doubted that it would ever come to fruition. "I think it would be too late to do it now," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass. And Garry then did leave us. [Marshall died in 2016.] [For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible."
