The podcasters are set to return to solve another murder.
It doesn’t take long to buy into Only Murders in the Building, Hulu’s cozy-yet-dark, funny-yet-compelling new murder mystery series. And the potent cast—starring comic legends Steve Martin and Martin Short along with acting/singing superstar Selena Gomez—doesn’t hurt either; their chemistry is impeccable. And in case if you haven’t been along for the ride, now that ll 10 episodes of the show’s first season are out, you can binge right through—and then join the rest of us as we eagerly await Season 2 for the story’s continuation.
For anyone who hasn’t yet tuned in (and, uh, what else have you been watching?), the show follows three neighbors in a bougie New York City apartment building, all obsessed with the same true-crime podcast. There’s Mabel (Gomez), a young woman with a mysterious past, Charles (Martin), an actor famous for his portrayal of a detective in a 1990s show, and Oliver (Short), a struggling Broadway director with a notorious flop on his resumé. When one of their other neighbors—an obnoxious and buttoned-up young man—is found dead, the three decide they’re going to solve the case and start their own podcast for others to follow the investigation…as long as their personal lives don’t get in the way.
Before Season 1
even reached its surprising conclusion (and what a finale it was!), Hulu renewed the show for a second season. There’s always more murders to solve (as we’ve all seen with the last half-decade’s explosion of true crime podcasts), and, uh, well, based on how Season 1 concluded, it looks like our humble trio is going to have their hands full to solve a whole new mystery.
Could some familiar characters get deeper in the mix in Season 2? Remember, in addition to our trio there’s still the musician Sting and Tina Fey’s Sarah Koenig-esque character Cinda Canning who could help out.
Here’s everything we know about Only Murders in the Building Season 2.
We’d guess that Season 2 would come out just around the same time in 2022 as Season 1 did in 2021—late summer, early fall. With Covid-related production delays largely a thing of the past, we hope that production schedules can—safely—resume at close to normal.
With Season 1’s finale closing the book on Tim Kono’s murder—sorry Charles, but Jan (Amy Ryan) was a murdering lunatic!—it seemed ever-so-briefly like our trio may have had a happy ending. Mabel was happy with a now-vindicated Oscar, Charles was texting with Lucy (and not signing his name on the end), Oliver was reconnecting with his son (and probably having a lot of dips for dinner), and we assume that Teddy Dimas, Theo Dimas, and Jan are all in jail.
But then there’s that ending. Mabel leaves Charles and Oliver on the roof, because she feels like something is still open-ended. Charles and Oliver get a text to get out of the building immediately, go down to grab Mabel, and Mabel…is standing, covered in blood, over The Arconia building administrator Bunny’s (who Mabel had just called a bitch) dead body. The cops show up, and our Only Murders in the Building heroes are all arrested for Bunny’s murder as the building residents, the Only Murders superfans, Oscar, and Cinda Canning all look on.
Cinda Canning, in particular, seems to have some ideas (with some help from her lookalike asssitant). Only Murderers in the Building, a new podcast from Cinda, coming in Season 2.
Feels safe to assume that all of our heroes—Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez—will be returning. It would make sense for Aaron Dominguez (who plays Oscar) to return as well. We can probably expect to see those Arconia neighbors again, and it seems likely that Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) could see her role increased.
Maybe our trio runs into Jan or the Dimases in jail? We wouldn’t turn down more Nathan Lane, James Caverly, or Amy Ryan. Oh, and Sting. More Sting, please!
