Nicolas Cage Shares First Face/Off Sequel Story Details – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Nicolas Cage hints that it will be a family affair in the upcoming Face/Off sequel, which is currently in development at Paramount Pictures.
Face/Off star Nicolas Cage has revealed that the upcoming sequel to the 1997 action film will focus on his and John Travolta's characters' children.
Speaking with Collider, the actor shared that the current story for Face/Off 2 is centered around the children of Castor Troy (Cage) and Sean Archer (Travolta) who grow up destined to face off against each other. "I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability," Cage said. "It's almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up, then it becomes like three-dimensional chess, and then it's not just the two, John Travolta and myself, it's four of us ping-ponging and going at different levels, and it becomes even more complex. I think there's a lot of fertile ground there. I had maybe one meeting in an office, but I haven't heard anything since, so I don't know."

Directed by John Woo, Face/Off was released in 1997 by Paramount Pictures, starring Travolta as FBI Agent Sean Archer, who tracks down and captures his son's murderer, Castor Troy. However, when Archer learns of a bomb planted in Los Angeles with only Troy's brother knowing its exact location, he volunteers for an experimental face transplant program that swaps his face with Troy's to impersonate him in the brother's prison. Meanwhile, the real Troy awakens from his coma and takes Archer's face to infiltrate his family life. Face/Off was a massive success, grossing $245 million globally. The movie is often considered one of Woo's best works.
Paramount initially announced a remake of Face/Off in 2019, but those plans were later scrapped in favor of developing a direct sequel to the 1997 film. Adam Wingard, best known for directing The Guest (2014) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), will helm the upcoming sequel. He previously remarked that Cage will be a major part of Face/Off 2, even though his character died at the end of the original film. "He’s just having such a moment," said Wingard. "A couple of years ago, the studio maybe would have wanted a hot, young, up-and-coming actor or something. Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again." Cage is enjoying a career renaissance at the moment, largely thanks to his leading roles in the 2021 drama film Pig and the 2022 action comedy film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Cage can currently be seen in the Western film The Old Way, which is playing in theaters. The actor stars as a gunman sent on a mission to find a vengeful gunslinger after he killed his wife. Following The Old Man, fans of the actor can see him as Count Dracula in Renfield, which recently released its terrifying first trailer. The Universal Monsters film is based on an original idea by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and also stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise) and Awkwafina (Shang-Chi).
Face/Off 2 does not have a release date at this time.
