After nabbing an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in The Lost Daughter last year, it’s Jessie Buckley‘s time to shine as the star of her very own disturbing horror movie, Men, which opens in theaters this weekend.
Written and directed by Alex Garland—also known as the man who brought you Ex Machina and Annihilation—this folk horror movie finds Buckley as a woman named Harper who rents a holiday house, in an attempt to heal from a traumatic incident. Unfortunately, her vacation doesn’t exactly go as planned. Right away, she’s getting a weird vibe from the house’s owner, Geoffrey, played by Rory Kinnear, who also plays various men that Harper meets in the village.
Though the film has gotten mixed reviews so far, critics agree that this is another singular, big swing from Garland. At the very least, you know it will be beautiful and strange. If you want to check out the movie for yourself, here’s what to know about where to watch Men, including when to expect Men on streaming.
Right now, the only place to watch Men is in a movie theater when the film opens in theaters on May 20 in the U.S, and in more theaters in the U.K. on June 1. You can find a showing near you here. After the film’s theatrical run, you’ll be able to purchase the movie on digital platforms like iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.
The Men digital release date has not yet been announced. It’s hard to say when Men, which is an A24 release, will come to digital. But we can make an educated guess based on previous A24 releases.
One recent A24 theatrical release, Red Rocket, became available to rent for $19.99 on digital platforms after about two months—aka 45 days, which is more or less the new standard theatrical window since the pandemic—in theaters. If Men follows a similar release, you may be able to rent it as soon as mid-July 2022.
That said, Everything Everywhere All At Once, another A24 release, will release on digital on June 7, which is about 70 days after its theatrical release.  If Men follows that release strategy, you may have to wait until early August before you’re able to rent Men for $19.99.
No. Men will not be on HBO Max, because Men is an A24 film and not a Warner Bros. film. Also, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. (Last year, Warner Bros. opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.) It’s possible that X will be on HBO and HBO Max someday, but it will not be any time soon.
No. It’s possible that Men will be on Netflix someday, given that the streaming service hosts a number of A24 films, including Uncut Gems. But there’s no guarantee. If you don’t want to miss the film, your best bet is to see Men in a movie theater or wait to rent it for $19.99.
