Netflix has a new true crime docuseries that just came out this week, and it’s certain to make you extremely frustrated. Don’t Pick Up the Phone tells the true story of a hoax caller who impersonated a police officer and convinced at least 70 food industry workers across the United States to perform strip searches and even worse acts on their employees. It’s a truly harrowing story, and it’s not surprising to know there’s also been a dramatized movie based on the case.
Compliance was written and directed by Craig Zobel (Mare of Easttown) and it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The movie is based on the 2004 case in Mount Washington, Kentucky, where an 18-year-old McDonald’s employee named Louise Ogborn was accused of stealing money by a prank caller and was subject to a strip search. Sadly, the situation only escalated from there which led to sexual abuse.
Though Compliance was met with controversy when it first came out, it also received critical acclaim. If you’ve watched Don’t Pick Up the Phone and want to know whether or not the 2012 movie is on Netflix, you’re in the right spot!
Unfortunately, Compliance is not currently streaming on Netflix U.S., but it is available on another platform. At the time of this writing, you can stream the movie on Amazon Prime Video here. If you are subscribed to Amazon, you’ll be able to watch Compliance for free.
Compliance stars Dreama Walker (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23), Ann Dowd (The Leftovers), Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), Bill Camp (Joker), and other talented actors. For her role as Becky, Dowd was nominated for a Film Independent Spirit Award.
If you aren’t subscribed to Amazon Prime Video and are looking for scripted true crime movies on Netflix, we’d recommend Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and The Good Nurse.
