A doctor, a nurse, and a lawyer walk into an Amsterdam train station. This isn’t the set-up for a joke, this is the premise of the new Christian Bale movie, Amsterdam, which opens in theaters this weekend.
Loosely based on the true story of a 1933 plot to overthrow U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and install a dictator, Amsterdam stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington as the three prime suspects in a murder of a US Senator in the 1930s. But the star power doesn’t end there—the Amsterdam cast also includes Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldaña, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek, and Robert De Niro.
Working against the movie is the reputation of its writer/director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), who has racked up numerous allegations of abusive behavior and sexual misconduct over the years. If you’re curious about the movie but would rather not support Russell at the box office, the good news is that you likely won’t have to wait too long to catch Amsterdam on streaming. Read on to find out where to watch Amsterdam and when to expect Amsterdam to release on digital and streaming.
For now, the only way to watch Amsterdam is to see it in a movie theater, when it opens on Friday, October 7. You can find a showing near you via Fandango.
After the movie’s theatrical run, you’ll be able to purchase Amsterdam on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, and more. You’ll also likely be able to stream Amsterdam on HBO Max and Hulu. Read on to learn more.
There is not yet an official digital streaming release date for Amsterdam. But here’s what know.
Amsterdam is a 20th Century movie, and a previous release from 20th Century, The Bob’s Burgers Movie, became available to stream on HBO Max and Hulu, as well as available to buy on digital platforms like Amazon for $19.99, after 45 days in theaters. If Amsterdam follows a similar release strategy, you may be able to stream the movie at home as early as late November 2022.
That said, because this is such a star-studded big movie, it’s possible that 20th Century will keep Amsterdam exclusive to theaters for longer than 45 days. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
Yes, but you’ll have to wait. Amsterdam will likely go to HBO Max during the film’s “Pay 1 window,” which is the time period in which premium cable channels have exclusive rights to play the film. This is because even though Disney now owns 20th Century Studios, Disney is bound to a 10-year deal between 20th Century Fox and HBO that was signed in 2012. That deal runs through 2022—though HBO/HBO Max agreed to share co-exclusive rights with Disney+, meaning it’s possible that Amsterdam will release on both HBO Max and Disney+ at the same time, possibly around late November 2022.
But it’s likely you’ll see Amsterdam on Hulu instead of Disney+ because that’s where a previous 20th Century movie release, Bob’s Burgers, ended up. Hulu is also owned by Disney, and it would be a more appropriate home for the R-rated mystery movie than Disney’s family-friendly streamer.
No. Amsterdam will not be streaming on Netflix, due to the fact that it will eventually stream on HBO Max and likely Hulu. Sorry!
