To fill the gaping hole left in this year’s crude dark comedy section, comes Dean Craig’s star-studded The Estate. Written and Directed by Craig himself, The Estate has a promising premise that can support both comedy of errors–if that’s what the movie is going for, or even just a random slapstick style of humor. Craig isn’t new to the premise of escalating inappropriateness amongst family. Death at a Funeral, written by the English writer-director, was also about a tragic family event going berserk. But instead of taking place at a funeral, The Estate takes place in the lavish home of a rich relative everyone is waiting to exploit.
After her brilliant and frankly, scarring performance in the horror gem Hereditary, Toni Collette has tried her hands at another dark comedy, Knives Out. It only makes sense for her to keep exploring the sub-genre especially because of the first one being a massive success. Here, Collette plays Macey, one of the financially struggling sisters trying to woo and take advantage of the dying, rich aunt. This has been a pretty eventful year for Collette’s rounded acting career. She has starred in Netflix’s thriller drama Pieces of Her and that too as one of the leads. She has also appeared alongside Colin Firth in the crime drama The Staircase.
The hopes have been sky high for The Estate thanks to its foolproof premise guarded by an incredible set of actors. The film was announced in December 2021 by Signature and Capstone and along with that, the primary cast was made public as well. Macey and Savannah, two sisters who own a failing business, will lay the ground for the rest of the chaos to follow. In the midst of their financial mayhem, the sisters get to know about a filthy-rich estranged aunt who’s not too far away from passing. When they arrive at Aunt Hilda’s place, they meet their rivals in the form of other relatives that are also trying to get a bite of the dying woman’s fortune. Now they all must do their absolute best (or worst) to win Hilda’s affection and inherit her incredible fortunes.
The trailer shows us the gorgeous house of the dying Aunt Hilda. And what do we know! It’s the same house where American Horror Story: Coven was shot. With unimaginable obscenities, to borderline(?) incestuous approaches, come together the odd family of sisters and cousins that are trying to exploit an Aunt who isn’t as naive as they think.
The Estate Cast:
The Estate did not leave anything to chance when it comes to choosing the perfect cast. To elevate Toni Collette’s sort of moralistic Macey, comes her sister Savannah–being played by a known name in the realm of comedy, Anna Faris. Faris’ fame rose to its height with the Scary Movie film franchise (2000-2006), and it has only been uphill for her since. She has even played Erica, a recurring role in NBC’s most celebrated sitcom, Friends.
To play the incestuous cousin comes in The X-Files and Californication star David Duchovny. Body Heat star Kathleen Turner plays the ever-so sought-after aunt Hilda. Whether intentionally done or not, Kathleen playing Chandler Bing’s drag-queen father in Friends and then starring in a movie with Anna Faris who was the surrogate for the Bing twins is a pretty funny coincidence that is sure to draw more attention to the film.
Where to Watch and Stream the 2022 movie ‘The Estate’ Online?
