What is more meta than a movie within a movie? How about a movie within a movie based on a TV show about a bunch of guys making movies in Hollywood where the executive producer is actually the inspiration for the protagonist?
That’s essentially the plot of HBO’s Entourage, the franchise inspired by Mark Wahlberg’s rise to stardom. The HBO series, created by Doug Ellin, won several Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe awards and its subsequent film garnered $49.3 million at the box office.
Entourage premiered on HBO in 2004, introducing viewers to movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his main crew of supportive pals (Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven). The Devil Wears Prada star plays the main character who attempts to balance friendship and personal gain in Los Angeles alongside the latter four stars.
“It was certainly a different time,” Grenier recalled his experience on set during a GQ Australia interview in November 2020. “We wouldn’t have been able to get away with the same things today that we did on the show. I’m glad that we got it done when we did.”
He continued: “I could have used a little more Vince in my life, actually. But I’m happy to say that I was able to play a role and then transition back to myself. … I was making documentaries in Mexico when I got the role, so it was quite a change.”
The entourage of Entourage was much larger than just the five main guys that fit on the poster. The cast also consisted of other stars — including Debi Mazar, Constance Zimmer and Emmanuelle Chriqui — who’ve made memorable cameos on the HBO drama.
Nearly four years after the award-winning series wrapped, the Hollywood crew reunited for a cinematic followup — set mere days after the finale’s cliffhanger scenes.
“We shot wide format from the beginning, like it was on a big screen,” Grenier told The Independent in June 2015. “Fans watched four or five episodes in a row. The only difference [for the movie] is that we’ve cut out the beginning and end credits.”
He added: “One of the things I like about this [project] is that it’s about how you bring up your neighbors and your friends and your family, how you support them. Even though it seems that the theme is about indulgence and materialism, it’s really not. It’s about supporting your friends.”

Grenier didn’t just need to embody his character Vincent Chase for this lead role — he needed to embody Mark Wahlberg himself. This Wahlberg-inspired protagonist from Queens was a good-looking actor who’s supposed to be above average at what he does. Vince loves women but is mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically incapable of attending any kind of social event without his boys.
Entourage is likely Grenier’s best-known role, but he has branched out since with roles in Trash Fire, Marauders and A Christmas Love Story. He also starred in Devil Wears Prada and Drive Me Crazy. After a decade without acting in a television series, Grenier joined Netflix’s Clickbait series in 2021.
Grenier began dating Jordan Roemmele in 2017 before they tied the knot in June 2022.

Ferrara comes on the scene in Entourage as Vince’s childhood friend, Salvatore Assante (a.k.a. Turtle). Turtle mostly operates as Vince’s driver after following his boy out to California. He grows into an entrepreneur as the show progresses.
Ferrara has since stirred up some buzz when he played Joe Proctor in the Starz series Power. The New York native also had featured roles in Think Like a Man, Dating & New York, Last Vegas and Club Life.
Though Ferrara is more domesticated than his character, Entourage’s business mindset did carry over as he helped open Fat Sal’s Deli, a sandwich shop in Hollywood.

Piven portrayed the role of Ari Gold, Vince’s aggressive agent with the mouth of a sailor.
This Emmy and Golden Globe winner had an immense resume leading up to Entourage and after the series wrapped. The New York native also appeared in Say Anything, Judgment Night, Ellen, Serendipity, Chasing Liberty, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World and So Undercover. He also had series regular gigs on Mr. Selfridge and Wisdom of the Crowd.
Piven was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women in 2017, which he has since denied.
“I unequivocally deny the appalling allegations being peddled about me,” the actor said in a statement to Us Weekly at the time. “It did not happen. It takes a great deal of courage for victims to come forward with their histories, and my hope is that the allegations about me that didn’t happen, do not detract from stories that should be heard.”

In Entourage, Connolly played Eric “E” Murphy, who was Vince’s best friend and eventual manager.
Connolly has continued acting after Entourage. He starred in the CBS show Friends with Better Lives, however, it was canceled after the first season. He also appeared in Pitch, The Oath, The Ugly Truth, The Notebook and He’s Just Not That Into You. He also tried his hand at directing, helming John Travolta‘s Gotti.
The Dear Eleanor actor was first linked to Zulay Henao in 2019. The pair welcomed their first child, daughter Kennedy, in June 2021.

Every great group of friends has a nutcase. Dillon takes on the role while playing Vince’s crazy older half-brother, Johnny “Drama” Chase.
Dillon took his acting career seriously after Entourage. He kept steady work for the next 12 years after the TV show ended without any major breaks, appearing in various movies such as Hotel for Dogs, The Throwaways, A Day to Die and Reagan. He is set to star in the upcoming film American Metal, but a release date has yet to be announced.
The Hot Seat actor wed Jane Stuart in 2006 before they welcomed daughter Ava. Dillon and Stuart eventually split in 2017.

Shauna Roberts, Vince’s publicist, tells him that she is his West Coast mother — albeit one with quite the potty mouth — and the talented Mazar brings the sassy character to life.
The New York native, who rose to fame as a backup dancer for Madonna, has also acted in Jungle Fever, L.A. Law, Bullets Over Broadway, Empire Records, Batman Forever and The Pentaverate. Mazar has also guest-starred on more TV shows after Entourage wrapped before landing a series regular role on Younger. (The TV Land show eventually wrapped its seventh season in 2021.)
Mazar and husband Gabriele Corcos, whom she wed in 2002, opened the cafe Tuscan Gun in Brooklyn, which has since permanently closed. The Goodfellas actress and Corcos also share daughters Giulia and Evelina.

Jamie-Lynn Sigler portrays herself on Entourage. The Sopranos alum has went on to act in Guys with Kids, Beef House and Big Sky.
The Mob Town actress married AJ Discala in 2003, but the pair divorced three years later. She eventually moved on with Cutter Dykstra, whom she wed in 2016. The married couple share sons Beau and Jack.
