The Sanderson sisters are back. Nearly three decades after the release of Hocus Pocus in 1993, the long-awaited sequel officially hit Disney+ on September 30. The highly-anticipated follow-up ushered in a new coven of witches, but there are some undeniable Easter eggs that call back to the original film.
After years of possible talks of a sequel, the Black Flame Candle was officially re-lit in Rhode Island when
Hocus Pocus 2 began filming in fall 2021. All three of the Sanderson sisters (Bette Midler, Kath Majimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker) confirmed that they would be reprising their roles along with Doug Jones, who starred as Billy.
The Halloween classic is filled with twists, turns, and Easter eggs that celebrate the nostaligia of the first installation. From Mary’s crooked smile to a couple actually watching the original Hocus Pocus, check out all the Easter eggs you may have missed in Hocus Pocus 2.
Hocus Pocus 2 opens with a flashback to the Sanderson sisters’ youth, where Mary suggests doing a "calming circle" just like she did in the original.
Sarah sang the anthem to manipulate the children of Salem in the original film. During the flashback to their youth in the sequel, viewers learn that Hannah Waddingham’s Witch Mother sang it first in the Forbidden Forest.
The Sanderson Witch Museum was closed and transformed into a local magic shop, where the Sanderson sisters’ spell book and Black Flame Candle are discovered.
Gilbert transformed the Sanderson sisters’ former home into the Ole Salem Magic Shoppe. In the sequel, Gilbert reveals that he was a trick-or-treater when the Sanderson sisters wreaked havoc on Salem in 1993. He said that he developed a fascination with the trio of sisters after watching them take flight.
Fans of the original Hocus Pocus understand the significance of the Black Flame Candle. In the sequel, Becca, an aspiring witch, lits the candle during a birthday spell in the forbidden forest, unknowingly awakening Winifred, Sarah, and Mary.
Mary’s role as the quirky middle Sanderson sister was accompanied by her crooked smile. Actress Kathy Najimy revealed that her smile was on the other side of her face in the sequel. "It’s on the other side mainly because it’s hard for me to do it on the side I did it on 30 years ago," she told Entertainment Weekly. "We can justify it because there’s a scene at the beginning where Winnie slaps me, and my mouth goes to the other side," Najimy revealed. "And then she slaps me again, and it goes to the other side and sticks."
Becca and Izzy used salt to protect themselves from the Sanderson sisters and their magic in Hocus Pocus 2. Allison used a similar method to protect herself and her friends in the original film.
The Sanderson sisters used a broom, mop, and vacuum to fly after trick-or-treaters stole their brooms in the first film. In the remake, the sisters grab a broom, Swiffer, and two Roombas vacuums to fly.
Zombie Billy Butcherson climbed into his grave at the end of Hocus Pocus. He made his big return in the sequel.
One of the more not-so-subtle references to the original Hocus Pocus film is the actual Hocus Pocus film. LOL! During a dance sequence, the film showcases a couple watching the original Hocus Pocus in a scene with the Master Devil and Medusa Lady. Not only does this scene call back to the first Hocus Pocus, but it also serves as a heart-warming tribute to the late Garry and Penny Marshall, who dressed up as the Master Devil and Medusa Lady in the original.
Nearly three decades may have passed, but the Sanderson sisters haven’t lost their ability to put on a stellar musical performance. The trio performed three different musical performances throughout the sequel, including the classic spooky season anthem "I Put A Spell On You."
Becca and her friends channeled the iconic Sanderson sisters’ walk as they headed down the street together at the end of the film.
